R edazione" Damned Soul ": Bram Stoker's Dracula is a vampire classic. What prompted you to choose your film?

Stefano Leonforte: This is an extremely fascinating film, not just visually. His “storia”, fatta anche di vicissitudini, dubbi e incomprensioni, è alquanto particolare. Ma è indubbio che il regista, pur non entusiasta di dirigere un film che non aveva contribuito a sceneggiare, ci abbia messo molto del suo... Red.: Cosa pensi della figura del vampiro, sia nella sua veste classica, sia in quella moderna?

S.L.: Come scrivo nell'introduzione del libro, il vampiro, il succhiasangue, rappresenta l'archetipo dell'orrore. È una figura universale, antichissima, i cui tratti salienti sono riconoscibili in creature di cui si hanno testimonianze fin dagli albori della civiltà. Certamente gran parte del suo fascino ha a che fare con i poli che – scrive Ernst Jones – spingono il defunto a tornare dalla tomba: quelli apparentemente opposti dell'Amore e dell'Odio. Le figure maledette, specie se votate alla sfera sessuale come nel caso del vampiro, esercitano sempre una grande attrazione. Anche se, a ben guardare, la libido del revenant rimane per lo più confinata a uno stadio orale. Stephen King ha scritto alcune righe illuminanti sull'argomento nel suo “Danse Macabre”. Avere la SLA vuol dire anche dover fare i conti con un’assistenza che non c’è e che diventa indispensabile man mano che la malattia progredisce, doversi battere per diritti negati, per non ritrovarsi soli, malati e famiglie, spesso senza mezzi economici né informazioni né assistenza domiciliare adeguati a sopportare la quotidianità di una malattia catastrofica, in preda alla disperazione.
Ovviamente so bene che questo non vale solo per la SLA, ma è un dramma comune a tutte le condizioni di malattia "rare" o che non sono ancora oggetto della giusta attenzione da parte del sistema sanitario e delle case farmaceutiche, che non sono certo enti di beneficenza...

La mia domanda, semplice e limpida come una goccia d’acqua, è: se, giunto alla fine della propria vita, un uomo sceglie, in piena coscienza e assistito amorevolmente, e circondato dall’affetto dai propri cari e curato da personale esperto, di non voler più accettare uno stato di sofferenza che è diventato insostenibile, nonostante la vita gli doni ogni giorno tutto ciò che ce la fa amare, può avere la libertà di rifiutare atti medici la cui prosecuzione sarebbe da lui vissuta come accanimento, può lasciare che la vita e la natura facciano il loro corso, o qualcuno deve arrogarsi il diritto di decidere al posto suo?

Allora mi sono nuovamente attivato e mi sono praticamente autoprescritto esami e approfondimenti diagnostici che un non medico non avrebbe ovviamente potuto neanche conoscere e valutare, perchè semplicemente non addetto ai lavori...
Il punto è che mi sono fermato a riflettere e mi sono chiesto: se nonostante la mia condizione particolare anch'io mi sono sentito per lunghi periodi only, as will the others? Per le malattie mi riferisco, in particolare, a quelle gravissime patologie che coinvolgono il sistema neuromuscolare, come la sclerosi laterale amiotrofica, oppure ai gravi traumatismi cranio-encefalici e alla sindrome locked-in (che significa per l’appunto “incarcerato”): tutte situazioni nelle quali l’esito finale, anche grazie alla avanzata tecnologia medica, è che il carceriere ha gettato la chiave e il destiny is to remain prisoners of their bodies for the rest of life.
